Crows star Eddie Betts has had a kindergarten in Fiji named in his honour after a recent community trip to the South Pacific island.

Betts, his family and a Crows contingent featuring fellow players Jake Lever and Hugh Greenwood, as well as coaches Matthew Clarke and Tate Kaesler helped rebuild the kindergarten after it was destroyed during a cyclone.

Cyclone Winston was a devastating storm that struck Fiji in February, 2016.

More than 40 people died when Cyclone Winston, the most powerful storm to make landfall in the southern hemisphere, smashed schools, houses, churches, roads and crops.

Eddie Betts and his wife Anna had visited Fiji last year and were devastated when they found out about the widespread destruction the cyclone caused.

The Betts family wanted to do something to help, so with the support of the Crows Children’s Foundation they organised the group of players, coaches and family to make the trip over.

“Me and my wife Anna and my two boys, we came last year and we helped build a kindergarten,” Betts said.

“We thought it was a great experience and we thought we could get the Club involved…it’s a fantastic trip.”

“I get a lot out of it and I love working in communities.”

The Crows contingent helped rebuild the kindergarten, located in the Sigatoka Valley, through Outrigger Fiji’s community tourism project.

Outrigger Fiji General Manager Peter Hopgood announced the kindergarten would be named in Betts’ honour.

“It really means so much to the community,” Mr Hopgood said.

“You [Eddie Betts] coming back two years in a row also means a lot to the school and to Outrigger so if it’s ok with you we would like to dedicate the kindergarten and name it the ‘Eddie Betts Kindergarten’.”

Betts’ wife Anna said her family had a special connection with Fiji.

“I think for us Fiji, it’s just the community feel, they are very much like Aboriginal people [where] family is really important so I think it was something that Eddie and myself wanted to get involved in,” Ms Scullie said.

During the trip, the group also took time out to visit Club apparel sponsor BLK’s factory in Lautoka where they could witness a Crows jumper being made.
