The Crows have drawn pick seven in the first AFL Women’s draft but the ranking will not affect player selections on October 12.

Representatives of the eight inaugural clubs involved in the new league met on Thursday to select numbers from one to eight out of a barrel.

GWS will have the first pick in the draft but – like Adelaide, Fremantle (pick 4) and Brisbane (pick 2) – has no competition for the players who have nominated for its squad.

Crows coach Bec Goddard will use pick seven to officially select the first of 18 players from more than 100 who have nominated South Australia on their draft form.

Most of these nominees are SA and Northern Territory based players.

Carlton (pick 3), Collingwood (pick 6), Melbourne (pick 8) and Western Bulldogs (pick 5) will compete for all the Victorian talent.

The women’s draft will follow a snaking order, with the club holding the number one pick then having the last pick in the second round (16).

The Adelaide/NT team has 21 spots to fill on its list, adding to the six players already signed – Chelsea Randall, Kellie Gibson, Ange Foley, Courtney Cramey and rookies Jasmine Anderson and Erin Phillips.

Most of the players will be claimed through the October 12 draft but there will then be an opportunity to sign three free agents.
